Magnetic Stripe
Probably, most people are familiar with magnetic (mag) stripe cards. ATM (MAC) cards, credit cards, loyalty cards, gift cards, and a huge list of other applications employ mag stripe technology. Mag stripes are the brown or black strips on the back of a credit card that store the user’s information, including ID, account number, and PIN (personal identification number). Mag stripe has been around for decades and is still a very viable technology.
Smart Cards are making their way into mag stripe’s territory, but the transition to date has been slow coming. And, even though identity theft and Homeland Security is driving smart card and biometric ID adoption, mag stripe technology will continue to remain in use for many years to come.
